It seems like it has been a long time since we last communicated. Much has transpired in my University and personal life since that time. On the personal side, the passing of my mother 1 February and birth of my first grandson to our oldest son, J.C. and his wife Amanda, 1 March provided for much reflection on my roots in southern Missour"a" and new beginning of a life on this earth with all the opportunities and challenges that our grandson, Aiden James, has before him.

It's a smelly business when dealing with burps, poop and flatulence on a regular basis yet, Dr. Thaddeus Ezeji is not complaining. Ezeji, an assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences, conducts research in the area of biomass to biofuel production. As an environmentally conscientious individual, Ezeji is concerned about the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere specifically methane. Methane is 20 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, therefore it is more harmful to the environment.

With the changing economic climate and the academic landscape many department and college administrators are seeking ways to stay relevant while still meeting the changing needs of students and stakeholders. In effort to help the department move forward, Dr. James Kinder, department chair, accepted an additional role as the new interim chair of the Department of Human Nutrition in the College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) earlier this year.

Last December, 46 students and four faculty and staff advisors traveled throughout a damp yet lusciously green Ireland. They spent a part of their winter break traveling through Ireland visiting animal farms and production sites, museums, research centers, zoos and wildlife facilities among many other places.

For Dr. Ivanete Susin, coming to the Department as a visiting scientist from the "Luiz de Queiroz" College of Agriculture (ESALQ)/ University of Sao Paulo in Brazil was almost a no-brainer. As a former alumna, Susin was already familiar with the Department, The Ohio State University, and the city of Columbus.

On March 6, the Department celebrated the achievements of alumni and reminisced about past experiences as a student with faculty, students, and alumni during the Department's annual reception for Animal Sciences' CFAES Alumni Award recipients. Every year the Department recognizes a handful of alumni who have achieved extraordinary greatness through their contributions to students, industry, and their communities. The following are the Animal Sciences' alumni who received awards during this year's CFAES Alumni Award Ceremony held March 7th at the Fawcett Center for Tomorrow on the campus of The Ohio State University.
