OSU 2008 SUMMER INTERNSHIPS IN SUSTAINABILITY - COLUMBUS, OH
The Ohio State University Institute for Energy and Environment has provided grant funds to support sustainability projects in two broad areas:

  • Enhancing the sustainability of the Ohio State campuses
  • Encouraging sustainable practices among Ohio businesses

Up to six (6) student internships are available for the summer of 2008 to help pursue these objectives. Both undergraduates and graduates are eligible to apply, but each student must have a faculty sponsor to vouch for their capabilities.
Rather than being assigned a precise task, students will have some latitude to tailor an internship to match their personal interests and skills. Ideally, the internship work should dovetail with the student's program of study and ongoing research, and be linked to their career aspirations.

Examples of potential assignments include:

  • Life cycle assessment of alternative products or processes that might be utilized by The Ohio State University facilities and operations
  • Evaluating the financial and environmental benefits of green building in the context of Ohio State campus expansion plans
  • Analysis of innovative industrial technologies for converting waste streams into useful byproducts, including energy or material feedstocks
  • Developing, enhancing, or applying computer-based models of material and energy flows across networks of industrial facilities
  • Design and development of multi-media communication materials to demonstrate the business value of industrial ecology practices
  • Investigation of public policy options or public-private collaboration opportunities to encourage sustainable business innovation.

To apply, or to obtain further information about this opportunity, please send e-mail to: Fiksel.2@osu.edu

Applications are due by May 3, and should be submitted electronically to Dr. Fiksel.
Each application should include the following:

  • Student name, program of study, and academic record
  • Student's personal resume, including prior employment or internships
  • Written statement of qualifications and interests (1 page maximum)
  • Supporting letter from at least one faculty sponsor

Selection of candidates will be based on both merit and compatibility with program needs. The award decisions will be made by a panel of faculty members from several different participating colleges. The target date for announcing awards is May 12, 2008.

BEST FRIENDS SOCIETY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - KANAB, UT
The Best Friends Internship Program is for people 20 or older who want to work with animals.  This intensive training program offers students hands-on experience in animal care, socialization, behavior, and rescue as they participate in the daily work of the sanctuary. The program provides a unique opportunity to work at the nation's largest lifetime care sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals.

The Internship program lasts six weeks and is geared towards general animal care.  The first two weeks the intern's schedule will involve working in all animal areas observing and learning general animal care techniques for domesticated animals.  For the rest of the time the intern may concentrate on areas of particular interest to them. There will be an opportunity to observe procedures in the spay/neuter clinic and to shadow a Vet Tech, but this is just a small part of the internship.

The internship will include doing weekly reflections and animal area experience reports. The intern is also required to come up with goals and objectives after their first two weeks here, which will be used to determine an area of concentration.

Best Friends interns provide enormous help to the animals and staff here at the sanctuary.  At the same time, the internship program can help those with an interest in animal care get a head start on a life long commitment to animals in need.
