Feed Efficiency Research and Outreach for the Beef Industry
A graduate student research assistantship in the PhD program is immediately available at the University of Idaho in a USDA, National Research Initiative funded project entitled:
Feed Efficiency Research and Outreach for the Beef Industry. The focus of the project is a new measure of feed efficiency (FE) in beef cattle known as residual feed intake (RFI), also known as net feed efficiency. RFI is an intensely studied, well-developed but relatively new measure of FE that is key to the future profitability and sustainability of the United States beef industry. This project has four research objectives to which the position will contribute. 1: Evaluate and quantify the relationships between RFI and product quality in progeny of Red Angus sires divergent for maintenance energy (ME) EPD. 2: Evaluate and quantify the relationships between RFI and finishing phase FE in the steer progeny of Red Angus sires divergent for ME EPD. 3: Determine the relationship between plasma IGF-1 at weaning and RFI in progeny of Red Angus sires divergent for ME EPD. 4: Determine the relationship between ME EPD and RFI EPD in bulls divergent for ME EPD. The project is directed by Dr Rod Hill.
The successful applicant will interact with an interdisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in growth, nutrition, genetics, meat quality, reproduction and animal physiology. The position will require the student to participate in conducting research at two main sites: the Nancy M. Cummings Research Education and ExtensionCenter in eastern Idaho, at the main campus, Moscow, in northern Idaho and for short periods at other sites.
