CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. STEVE BOYLES ON RECEIVING THE OSU ALUMNI AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED TEACHING!
Steve Boyles was honored with a surprise visit by President Gee, Archie Griffin, and Linda C. Martin along with his wife Kate and daughter, Adelaide, in his class at noon today! Their presence resulted from Steve being honored with The Ohio State University Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. This award honors faculty members for superior teaching. Recipients are nominated by present and former students and colleagues and are chosen by a committee of alumni, students, and faculty. Recipients of this award receive a cash bonus of $3,000, made possible by contributions of the Alumni Association, friends of Ohio State, and the Office of Academic Affairs. They also receive a $1,200 increase in their base salaries from the Office of Academic Affairs. The recipients will also be inducted into the University's Academy of Teaching, which provides leadership for the improvement of teaching at The Ohio State University.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ANIMAL SCIENCES STUDENTS SELECTED FOR ALPHA ZETA PARTNERS (AZP)!
In 1998, in response to the need for strong leadership skills among graduates, the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental sciences created Alpha Zeta Partners (AZP). The overarching goal of AZP is to "provide potential employers with an exceptional cadre of well-educated graduates who demonstrate the capacity for leadership" (Newcomb, 1998). Each year, through a highly selective application and screening process, approximately 20 of the college's most promising and vibrant students participate in three leadership seminars and a six-week study abroad to explore personal leadership capacities, diversity and pluralism, organizational change, and issues of national and international significance.  Congratulations to the following Animal Sciences students who were selected as members of AZP Class 10: Emily Chory, Kaitlyn Fieseler, Hanna Lemle, Joshua Lorbach, Kirk Massey, Julie Mezger, Emily Severt, Lindsay Shoup 

 
'EXPERIENCE OSU FOR A DAY' HOSTS NEEDED
Experience OSU for a Day (EOFD) is a CFAES program providing an opportunity for prospective students to visit campus. EOFD Hosts volunteer to allow prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 AM-1:00 PM for 1-2 weekdays each quarter. Hosts attend class as usual and are encouraged to show the student around our College campus, take their student to see the Oval, Norton House, Parker Dairy Store (lunch provided for host and shadow). Host volunteer forms are available in 100 AA or by emailing Callie Wells at wells.930@osu.edu.


CFAES STUDY ABROAD UPDATE
Spring Break Program:

Ten students of the CFAES Learning Community in Norton House will be traveling to Costa Rica for spring break (lead by Paul Heimberger). Students will visit significant ecological sites and spend several days at EARTH University.

Summer Quarter Programs:
Thirteen students have been selected to study abroad in China on "The Beijing Experience" with Melissa Krygier. Two additional programs, one in the Czech Republic and another in England, will also take place this summer.  Applicants will be selected before the end of winter quarter.
Winter Quarter Break Programs:
Four programs are being offered to FAES students during the winter break.  All programs will require a two credit hour seminar course during the fall quarter to prepare for the program.  All applications for winter break programs are due May 1, 2008.

KELLOGG COMPANY: QUALITY AND FOOD SAFETY INTERN - ATLANTA, GA 
Kellogg has a great Quality and Food Safety Internship opportunity at the Atlanta Convenience Foods Plant in Atlanta, GA. within the Frozen Foods business. In the position of Quality & Food Safety Intern, the primary function is to support food safety and quality initiatives. This position reports directly to the Plant Quality Manager.

The responsibilities of this position include the following: Conduct quality, Standard Operating Procedure, and Standard Operating Condition audits. Collect and analyze process and product data. Support process and quality improvement initiatives. Perform routine clerical duties. Assist with product traceability exercises. Support plant projects as needed.

Experience: Candidate must be at least in their Junior year at an accredited university majoring in an area of science or mathematics.

This internship is a year-long opportunity and candidates should be available to work at least 20-hours per week while attending school.

MOUNT VERNON FARM INTERNSHIP - SPERRYVILLE, VA
We aim to minimize cost associated with machinery, stored feed, grain, and inefficiency, while maximizing knowledge, creativity, letting the animals do the work of harvesting their own food through rotational grazing. We ask that interns share our passion for hard work and the resulting personal rewards along with the challenge of always trying to maximize the effectiveness of your efforts. In exchange, we offer you the knowledge of management-intensive grazing and all aspects of raising livestock naturally from conception of the calf to consumption of the steak. This knowledge encompasses a wide range of skills from homeopathic use to knowing how to cook various cuts of meat, from low stress herding to marketing our products. The endless pursuit of knowledge is the most exciting aspect of working on this farm.

Responsibilities: Daily maintenance of livestock such as checking livestock health, rotational grazing, replenishing mineral supply, erecting electric fence, and record keeping; Market our products on the farm and at farmers' markets and buyers' clubs; Assist in projects such as permanent fence construction, water line installation, working livestock, preparing for public events, and welcoming the public to the farm; Assist in research; Run errands; Make recommendations.

Internship Details: The work week is usually 5 1/2 days and between 40 and 55 hours. The 2008 internship/apprenticeship requires a trial period of a few weeks and then a minimum stay of three months. The pay is $600/month with a pay increase for those who decide to intern for eight months or more. Comfortable, but simple, on-farm housing is provided and interns receive a 20% discount on meat. AGRIBEEF: FEEDLOT MANAGEMENT INTERN - BOISE, ID 
Job Description: Individual interns will be assigned to intern at one of our feedlots - Moses Lake, Washington, Liberal, Kansas, American Falls, Idaho or Parma, Idaho. This is a hands-on internship program and will involve all aspects of feed yards including pen riding, doctoring, animal nutrition and feeding, yard maintenance, cattle processing, budgets.

HORMEL: PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT - AUSTIN, MN
Job Description: Hormel Foods Corporation has an exciting opportunity for a Product Development Intern within the Research & Development division in Austin, Minn. The full-time, 40 hours per week, internship will begin in May or June and run for approximately three months.

The intern will work closely with product development scientists on a wide variety of fresh and processed meats projects, which may require travel to other production facilities. The intern will gain knowledge of the product development process and learn to operate a wide variety of fresh and processed meats processing/packaging equipment.

Projects could include: Collecting meat quality data from carcasses and cuts in a slaughter/fabrication plant setting;  Assisting with data entry and analysis of meat quality data;  Conducting shelf life tests on fresh pork products; Preparing various fresh and processed meat products for review by sales/marketing staff; Assisting with all aspects of product development work on fully-cooked (uncured), cured and smoked meat products in the Hormel Foods R&D Pilot Plant

Qualified candidates will have a Junior status and be an Animal Science (or related field) major with a minimum 3.00 overall GPA. Successful candidates must demonstrate leadership skills, strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit. Previous meats experience (i.e., university meat lab, meats judging team, etc.) is beneficial. A requirement of this position is to be a Citizen or National of the United States, a lawful, permanent resident or have a valid work Visa.

Law: Review and analyze potential legal issues within a contract, the company or the biopharma industry, drafting and editing memos and contracts, attending client meetings and participating in negotiations between biotech attorneys and biotech industry experts.
Business: Assess, create and forecast new market opportunities for Genentech research projects and business development. Evaluate market landscape to predict trends and provide recommendations on program development and product differentiation strategies.

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Gilman International Scholarship is currently accepting applications from students participating in study abroad programs during Fall 2008 or the academic year 2008-2009. The Gilman Scholarship is open to all U.S. undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:
- Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
- Currently applying to or accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit
- Studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country
- Studying in a program that begins between July 15, 2008 and October 15, 2008
- Summer-only study abroad programs are not eligible.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FORUMS
The CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 and the Denman Research Forum on Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Many CFAES undergraduates work in your laboratories and classrooms doing research. These forums offer opportunities for students to share what they have done and serve as subject matter experts.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OFFICE SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
The Undergraduate Research Office is accepting applications through Monday (4/7) for its brand new 2008 Summer Research Fellowship. Twelve students will be paid $3,500 to conduct 10 weeks of full-time, independent research with an OSU faculty member.
