UNIVERSITY LABORATORY ANIMAL RESOURCES (ULAR) ANIMAL USAGE ORIENTATION AND REFRESHER
Orientation:  Wednesday February 6th, 12:00-1:00 PM
Required for all employees (faculty, staff, students) who have contact with animals as part of their job/research activities at OSU and have not already attended an orientation session. Students: If you are unable to attend this session, you must notify your supervisor and provide an explanation for your absence.

Refresher:  Wednesday February 6th, 1:00-1:30 PM
Required for all employees (faculty, staff, students) who have attended the Animal Usage Orientation three or more years ago and who still have contact with animals as part of their job/research activities at OSU. This refresher is required every three years to maintain your certification with the University.

If you are unsure of the last date of completion of your ULAR training, please contact Jeanne Osborne (osborne.2@osu.edu, 292-3779). 


CFAES AMBASSADORS NEEDED - ANIMAL SCIENCES MAJORS ENCOURAGED TO APPLY
CFAES Ambassadors are important to our recruitment efforts in the College; they assist with various events and interact with prospective freshmen and transfer students. Because CFAES Ambassadors are highly involved with the recruitment process, we strive to select undergraduate students from a cross-section of majors within the College. Ambassadors are selected through an application and interview process. Applications are due in 100 Ag. Admin by 5 p.m., February 8, and must be hand presented to either Jill Tyson or Trina Beebe. (If you are studying abroad, please contact the advisor, Jill Tyson (tyson.46@osu.edu) to make arrangements to turn in your application electronically.) Please contact Trina Beebe (beebe.25@osu.edu) for an application or stop by 100 Ag Admin and pick up a copy.


SHADES OF ANIMAL SCIENCES ANNOUNCEMENT 
Next meeting: Tuesday, February 5th at 6:00 in the Animal Science Arena (notice the time change)
Guest speaker, April Archer, a Food Scientist from Cargill Meat Solutions, will share information about her career path and internship/job opportunities with Cargill. We will begin the meeting at 6:00 with business and making our signs for the chili cook-off, followed by our speaker at 6:30. We will also be voting on our winter quarter social outing activity and a representative from the Beanie Drake Scholarship Committee will be there.
 
Shades is also very excited to announce that Cargill will be sponsoring a leadership retreat to be held April 18th and 19th at Mohican State Park! This will only be open to 25 paid members of Shades during spring quarter and we are asking for a deposit of $25 to reserve your spot, which will be refunded when you show up for the trip. We will be leaving at 4:00pm Friday, April 18th and returning at 5:00pm Saturday the 19th. We will be sharing much more information about this at our upcoming meetings.

If you are interested in running for a Shades officer position for the 2008-2009 school year, our officer elections will be held February 19th during our general meeting beginning at 5:30. For those on study abroad or who have class conflicts, you can write a short statement about what position you are running for, what qualifications you have for the position and your involvement in Shades and other activities, and send them to bowers.245@osu.edu by February 19th. These positions begin fall quarter of 2008, but spring quarter you will work along with the current officer for training.

Lastly, MANRRS has invited Shades to attend dinner at Dean Bobby Moser's house February 6, meeting at Ag Admin at 5:30. Please let me know if you are interested in attending. MANRRS has also extended an invitation to their International Festival Tuesday, February 19th from 3-5pm in Ag Admin Auditorium. They are looking for volunteers as well as guests. They are also touring the Cargill plants in Ohio April 9th and 10th on an overnight trip. If you are interested please let Jordan Bowers know (bowers.245@osu.edu).

This session will include tips on using the resources available at Ohio State and the Internet.  Finding an internship/job long distance will also be discussed.  This informative career-related session will be facilitated by Amy Lahmers, Student Services Coordinator, Department of Animal Sciences.

How to Prepare for Your Interview with the
College of Veterinary Medicine
Date:  Monday, February 4, 2008, 1:00-2:00 pm

Target Audience:  CFAES students who have applied to the College of Veterinary Medicine
Description:  This dynamic, interactive session will be facilitated by Dr. Ana Hill, DVM, PhD from the Department of Animal Sciences.  Students will learn tips for success in the veterinary school interview.

The Value of an International Experience for Undergraduate Students
Date: Monday, February 4, 2008, 3:30-4:30 pm
Location: 202 Animal Science Building
Target Audience: CFAES students who have at least one year left of their undergraduate education
Description:  Dr. Normand St-Pierre will discuss with students the importance of including global awareness and experience as part of their educational experience. Through internships, study abroad, travel tours, club trips, and other means, students can gain this valuable addition to their education, with careful planning, discussion with their advisors and interaction with other students who have taken advantage of these opportunities.

Selecting Your Minor - Important for graduation and also your future!

Description: Selection of your minor can be more than just fulfilling the requirements for graduation. Careful choosing of a minor course of study can provide you the extra experience and knowledge that will improve your success in your career. Dr. Henry Zerby will discuss the variety of minors that are available, considerations that you should make when you select your minor, and how the selection of your minor can complement your major course of study as well as your internship experiences.

Description: Dr. Joe Hogan will introduce students to the faculty and research activities that are occurring on the Wooster campus, and discuss student research internships and undergraduate research opportunities with faculty members in Wooster. Dr. Hogan will also give an overview of the animal facilities which are utilized for research on the Wooster campus.

Expo is a great way to network with employers when you're looking for an internship or full-time position. 2008 ANIMAL SCIENCES ACADEMIC QUADRATHLON - REGISTER BY FEBRUARY 8
The 2008 Academic Quadrathlon Team will be selected from the local contest to be held February 12th and 13th 2008. All undergraduates are encouraged to enter for an opportunity to win a trip to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the Midwest section Academic Quadrathlon competition held at the Midwest American Society of Animal Science Meetings March 16-19, 2008. The local contest will be held over a two day period, teams of four will participate in a lab practicum, oral presentation, quiz bowl, and written exam. The team that wins the local competition will be offered the opportunity to represent The Ohio State University Animal Sciences compete at the Midwestern contest held in March.  Last years team (Curtis Pittman, Sarah Wells, Brittany Jasko and Andrea Maurer) placed 1st in the regional competition and the Ohio State University will represent the Mid-west section at the National Cattleman's Beef Quiz Bowl to be held in Reno, Nevada on February 8th. Teams need to enter by Friday, February 8th, 2008. Individuals who would like to participate but do not have an organized team will be grouped with other individuals to form a full team. Encourage your friends and classmates to participate. Any questions can be answered by Dr. Kuber, 614-247-8305 or kuber.2@osu.edu. The team that wins will have one month to adequately prepare for the Midwest contest. Entry forms can be picked up in either Animal Science 110 or the Student Advising Center in 116 Plumb Hall, and can be returned to the same location after completion.  Teams can also use the attached application to enter your team and email to the attention of Jeanne Osborne (osborne.2@osu.edu). FAES STUDENT COUNCIL HOSTS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NIGHT
The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Science Student Council will be hosting Professional Development Night at 6:30 p.m. Monday (2/11) in the new 4-H Center. The event, 'Get the Job You Love' will feature Mark Evans, president of Mark A. Evans and Associates, a human resources consulting practice, will discuss how to get a job that fits you the best and that you will love to do. IRELAND ANIMAL SCIENCES STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
This program is an extension of the course, Anthrozoology: Human and Animal Interactions in Ohio, (ANIM SCI 294) offered by the Department of Animal Sciences during autumn quarter 2008. This course is designed to give students an appreciation for how history, government, geography, and infrastructure can impact the use of animals and land within our societies.There will also be the opportunity for students to compare the mid-western culture (especially focusing on the role of animals in our immediate communities; ANIM SCI 294) with that of other cultures (and directly comparing it with European cultures via travel to Ireland; ANIM SCI 697). Immediately following autumn quarter 2008 exams, students will travel to Ireland to engage in a learning experience that explores how animals are involved with our communities and beliefs. 

Dates: December 12-21, 2008 (tentative), immediately following Autumn Quarter 2008

The Location: This study abroad experience will begin with three days in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. While in Dublin, students will explore the Dublin Zoo, a working farm and visit the University of Dublin to learn about animal welfare and food production. The program will then move on to Galway, Ennis, Limerick, and Killarney, before returning to Dublin. 

Resident Director: Dr. Henry Zerby, a professor in the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences will teach the required autumn quarter class and accompany the students to Ireland. Ms. Kelly George, also from the Department of Animal Sciences, will also accompany the group.

OSU COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE EARLY COMMITMENT PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN FOOD SUPPLY MEDICINE
A partnership between The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES)

The goals of the Veterinary Early Commitment Program for Students Interested in Food Supply Medicine are to:
- Recruit qualified students early in their undergraduate career
- Better prepare students for careers in food supply medicine prior to entry into the DVM program
- Retain students' interest in food supply medicine
- Allow more opportunities for mentoring
- Graduate more DVM's into food supply medicine
- Graduate DVM's who have the skills and knowledge to serve modern food producing animal agribusiness

General information
1. Applicants must be full-time students in the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University
2. Students will apply during Spring Quarter of their second year in the Department of Animal Sciences.
3. Students will be selected during Summer or Autumn quarter by the selection committee.
4. A maximum of ten (10) seats will be reserved each year for these students
a. When possible, at least one seat will be reserved for a swine-focused student and at least one seat for a poultry-focused student
5. Two alternates will be selected each year.

2008 KIRWAN INSTITUTE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - COLUMBUS, OH
The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity is seeking graduate and undergraduate research assistants for its summer internship program. Applicants should have strong research and writing skills and a demonstrated interest in issues of race and ethnicity. Summer Intern positions range from 10 to 30 hours per week. Hourly wage is based on education/experience. No benefits are provided.

Principal Duties: Summer interns may work on research on a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to: marginalized racial and ethnic groups, racial and economic segregation, racial justice and regional equity, democratic participation and governance. Summer interns may assist in legal and policy analysis, preparation of presentations, literature reviews, bibliographic annotation, planning and coordinating meetings, conferences and other engagements, writing projects including book chapters, discussion papers and journal articles, and conducting extensive statistical & data analysis.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree completed (or in progress) or equivalent combination of education/experience; experience with Microsoft Office suite software, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint; experience with statistical and data analysis; excellent verbal and written communication skills; good organizational skills and the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; a demonstrated interest in issues of race and ethnicity.

An internship at Wolf Hollow provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with many different wildlife species and to learn skills such as handling techniques, diets, food preparation and feeding methods and to assist experienced rehabilitation staff with treatment procedures. MINER INSTITUTE: SUMMER EXPERIENCE IN EQUINE MANAGEMENT - CHAZY, NY
The emphasis of this program is the management of a commercial equine facility and improved horse handling and training skills. Students will learn ground training techniques including halter breaking, lungeing, longlining, and ground driving. Students will experience many different disciplines to varying degrees: saddleseat, huntseat, dressage, western pleasure and driving. Students become proficient at stallion handling, semen collection, and processing as well as broodmare management. Students will have an opportunity to participate in other Miner farm operations including milking, pasture management, and a variety of field work activities. All students will be asked to work long hours on occasion, but no more so than would normally be expected on a busy farm. Students work approximately every other weekend.

Requirements: Junior or senior standing; Agriculture or Life Science Interest/Field of Study

Each student's wage for the 13 week semester is $2,500.00. The students live at Miner Institute where housing, breakfast and lunch each weekday are provided at a cost of $300.00 for the summer session.

Our internship program gives college students and opportunity to spend 10 weeks in the summer exploring the core functions of our business-production, environmental science, accounting and geed manufacturing. Internships are paid positions and housing is provided/subsidized if required. Interns are expected to provide their own transportation. OSU LIBRARIES' UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PRIZE COMPETITION
All undergraduate students enrolled in a 300-level or above class with an assigned research project that involves using library or Web resources are eligible to enter the OSU Libraries? Undergraduate Research Prize Competition. Students consult with an OSU librarian during the research process and keep a research journal. A prize of $750 for the student author and $250 for the instructor will be awarded. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP, DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS - FAYETTEVILLE, AR

A Masters level, graduate assistantship is available in the University of Arkansas,  Department of Animal Science. The area of research for which this assistantship is available is Parasitology, focusing primarily on the identification and control of parasitic helminths of farm animals. Projects are currently available involving poultry and cattle. This position is primarily funded by commercial grants involving work on the more economically important helminths which parasitize cattle, turkeys and chickens. Three to five years' Quality Assurance and Sanitation experience/knowledge.
