I am sure you all have heard about the challenges we face in food animal production sectors with greater expectations of our consumers as to how animals are managed before the time product harvest occurs from the various species we use for food production...Our colleagues in the Australian Animal Welfare Science Centre are concerned that the use of the term harvest in this context is ambiguous and misleading...This is just one example of how the movement about concern for the manner of management of food producing animals impacts those of us in the food animal production sector.

Faculty Profile: Dr. Kimberly Cole

"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man." This quote, attributed to Winston Churchill, sums up why Dr. Kimberly Cole accepted an opportunity to work with horses at the Department of Animal Sciences. In May, Cole joined the Department as an Assistant Professor and State Horse Extension Specialist for the Equine Science Program where she immediately began developing new extension outreach programs and making revisions to the Equine Science Program.

New Animal Sciences Course Teaches Importance of Animals in Society

Nearly 80 students sat in a classroom in Jennings Hall on main campus to listen to Dr. Pauleen Bennett speak about the importance of animals in our society as part of a new animal sciences course. The new course, Animals in Society 240, introduced during the Autumn quarter, resulted from a long collaboration between the Department and the Animal Welfare Science Centre in Australia (AWSC).

Faculty Member Awarded Prestigous ASAS Fellow Award

Creating challenging courses, adopting creative teaching methods, along with his dedication to education, students and the animal sciences industry, earned Dr. Keith Irvin the 2007 Fellow Award. During the annual American Society of Animal Science meeting in July, Dr. Keith Irvin, professor, was awarded the 2007 Fellow Award in the Teaching Category.

Saddle and Sirloin Showmanship Contest Becomes Student Tradition

What began as an event for students to prepare for the International Livestock Exposition is now a special tradition for the Saddle and Sirloin Club. The Little International, first held in the fall of 1912, was established to help prepare livestock going to Chicago for the International Livestock Exposition the following December. Currently, it is an opportunity for students to utilize their showmanship skills in a fun yet serious atmosphere.

The Animal Sciences Graduate Student Association (ASGSA) is an organization that represents master's and Ph.D students at the Department of Animal Sciences by providing an opportunity to bring students together through professional and social events. Interaction among the students of various disciplines in Animal Sciences goes beyond the academic setting and aids in building valuable relationships for the future.
